Gongyi Grotto Temple was founded in the period of Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei Dynasty, which is one of the large-scale grottoes excavated by the royal family of Northern Wei Dynasty, and the Eastern Wei Dynasty, the Western Wei Dynasty, the Northern Qi Dynasty, the Sui Dynasty, the Tang Dynasty, and the Song Dynasty have successively excavated niches here to make statues.
Grotto Temple now exists in 5 caves, 1 thousand Buddha niches, more than 250 statue niches, 3 cliff statues, more than 7,000 statues of Buddha, more than 200 inscriptions. Remained in the country's most complete “Emperor and Empress Ritual Buddha map”. A total of 18, now preserved 15.
